Big Delta -- Delta -- or Delta Junction? The name 'Big Delta', as it's currently used, refers to the residential and farming community located near the confluence of the Tanana and Delta rivers, about nine miles north of Delta Junction. Delta Junction is the city itself - once called Buffalo Center. (See map below) City limits extend to the Fort Greely military reservation, to just past the Trophy Lodge on the Alaska Highway, to the Mill-Tan Road section line where it crosses Jack Warren Road, and to about Mile 269 on the Richardson Highway. The term 'Delta', though not an official
designation, in generally used to refer to the entire area -
basically the same region served by the local school district,
which extends 50 miles south and 25 miles north on the Richardson
All this raises an interesting question: what to call people who live in the Delta area. Deltans doesn't sound quite right. Neither does Deltaites. Some wags use "Deltoids," but that one doesn't work for everyone. So far, a good name for the people here seems to have eluded us.
