School Philosophy:

ArtTo provide a nurturing environment where a child can grow mentally, in a sense that the child develops who they are and an understanding of their place in the world around them, and physically, developing control over their body and honing basic skills that they will need to succeed in life.  To show the children the joy and feeling of accomplishment that comes with helping others, while nurturing peacefulness, kindness and compassion.  To allow the child to advance and excel at their own pace and yet to always be challenged, by way of observing each child and fostering to their individual needs.

                        Our Goals:

                        - Provide a nurturing environment

                        - Prepare child for a lifetime of learning

                        - Provide challenging activities as the child is ready

What is Montessori?

BuildingThe Montessori Method was developed by Maria Montessori, an Italian Physician with a knack for observing children. Montessori developed the specific materials that are used in the program, the methods of presenting materials, and the levels of challenge and follow through by observing the children and creating the program by how children naturally learn.  Montessori’s ideas about a child is that their mind’s absorb information like a sponge, which helped Montessori develop ways of introducing materials through presentations, like how a child would learn an activity by watching another child, and the use of all of the senses during the day of activities.

Although most people refer to the adult in the classroom as the teacher the job of the teacher is to direct the activities in the classroom.  Montessori materials will refer to this adult as the directress.  The directress is responsible for observing the children and making changes to the environment of the classroom, to the individual child’s learning plan, and current goings on in the classroom to help maintain peace, respect and a successful learning environment.  A directress is responsible for modeling appropriate behavior in the classroom.

SharingThe classroom environment is set up before the children arrive so that the children can proceed with activities they were working on from the previous day.  The children own the classroom and are taught to respect the classroom and the other students and their work.  Independence is encouraged, as the children are responsible for getting out and putting away each activity they choose to work with.  The classroom is a peaceful place and voices are kept at an inside level so other students are not disrupted.  There is also a “peace place” in the classroom where a child can sit and relax if they need alone time.  The classroom is also flexible, the children can move the tables and chairs for different activities and the child’s interest will also change the schedule if needed.

PlayingThe Montessori Method introduces “cosmic” education.  This is the idea that children are shown how they interact with the world around them and how their actions affect things around them.  Such as the importance of planting trees to help the soil from eroding, to block the wind from blowing in certain areas, to have air to breath, and fruit and other good things to eat.   Montessori’s goal was to teach the children basic skills such as math, writing and reading, but also to teach the children how to be responsible, productive citizens of the world.

Eligibility and Registration:

BuildingThe program is open to children ages 3-6 years old.  Being potty trained prior to attendance is not a necessity, although we do require that the family be working with them at home on training.    Potty training is an essential part of a child’s learning independence and self-efficiency, and allows them to fit in with the other children in the program.   Upon enrollment the child must be current on their immunizations per Alaska State standards and the parents must be able to provide a shot record as to that fact.

Families that wish to enroll in the program should call and make an appointment with the administrator to come to the school to enroll.   This registration meeting is mandatory for the administrator to discuss policies and the parents to share information about their child.  All registration documentation must be completed before the child may attend the program.

Our Program:

ExperimentsWe currently have two program options.  The first is a full day preschool program, this is geared towards families with working parents that want their children to attend preschool but also need childcare after the school day is over.

The second option is for families that don’t need full day care but want their child to attend an educational program and interact with other children in their age group to help prepare them for future learning.

Hours of Operations

Monday –Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm

Parents are welcome to visit the center any time during our working hours to observe the classroom environment and to check on their children.  If you would like to talk privately with your child’s teacher or the administrator please schedule a time with them when it will not interfere with the preschool class time.

The only time access to your child may be limited is during their first few weeks attending the school.  This is what is called the phase-in period in Montessori.  This is the period of time where your child is immersed in the program and is beneficial to your child’s success in the classroom that their time there not be interrupted.

Administrators Background and Experience:

Ms. Filla and studentsRae Ann Croy Filla was raised as a military child, having once been stationed at Fort Greely with her family and later ending her military journey with her father’s retirement here in 1997.  Ms. Filla has Bachelor of Science degrees in both Psychology and Biology achieved simultaneously at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.  Ms. Filla combined her two degrees to focus on child development.  Ms. Filla has always worked with children from babysitting and being a teacher’s aide in highschool, to working at Specialized Children and Family Services a division of Fairbanks Community Mental Health.  Ms. Filla started working at the Child Development Center on Fort Greely shortly after it’s reopening in 2004.  She has worked with all age groups from infant to the youth services program.  She specialized in the part day preschool program, which she developed and ran for almost four years with some of the Montessori techniques and the school age program.
